Active Cities
Active Cities is a European project that aims to provide more cycling and walking facilities in 8 European cities. After all, cycling and walking are not only better for the environment, but it is also healthier than, say, the car.
About the project
Leeuwarden is participating in the Active Cities project together with 10 other partners. This project will receive over €3 million in funding from the EU (Interreg North Sea Region programme). The aim is to make cities healthier.
How do we do this?
By encouraging active mobility. For example, cycling and walking.
What does the project focus on?
On the following 3 topics:
- public space
- mobility hubs
- human behaviour
What will we use Active Cities for?
Active Cities will play an important role in shaping the new Spoordok. The aim is to make sure it is pleasant to walk and cycle there.
The project also fits well with our local authority’s goal of becoming the cycling city in the Netherlands; Bike-on-1.
