Honorary citizenship
Honorary citizenship is conferred on someone who has made an outstanding contribution to Leeuwarden’s policies. Or for someone who has meant a lot to Leeuwarden’s national or international reputation. Honorary citizenship comes with a medal and a certificate. The certificate contains the details of the distinguished person and the reason why he or she received the award.

The sports medal is awarded to people, institutions or associations from Leeuwarden for their special sports achievements. The sports medal consists of a silver medal and a certificate. The certificate contains the recipient’s details and the reason that this person or organisation is receiving the award. The Leeuwarder Leeuwtje is for people or representatives of organisations who have made special efforts for Leeuwarden or Leeuwarden society. The Lion (Leeuwtje)is a gold pin. The Leeuwarder Leeuwtje list contains those who were awarded the Leeuwarder Leeuwtje.
HERO58
HERO58 is a distinction form the City of Leeuwarden for young people up to 27 years of age who volunteer for Leeuwarden or Leeuwarden society. With this distinction, Leeuwarden places young volunteers in the limelight. The distinction was presented for the first time by councillor Hilde Tjeerdema during the 2019 Volunteer Festival.
