The Nieuwestad is Renewing
The Nieuwestad and Peperstraat will be redesigned. The Chinese boulders will be replaced, pedestrians and cyclists will be put first even more, and there will be more green space. A striking and unusual work of art will be installed in Ipe Brouwerssteeg,. This will create a new pedestrian route between Ruiterskwartier and Nieuwestad.
Questionnaire about the Nieuwestad
Before we start designing the new Nieuwestad, we want to know what you find important. To find out, a questionnaire has been drawn up. We think it is important that as many residents, visitors and entrepreneurs as possible complete the questionnaire. You can complete the form from 2 April to 5 May 2024.
The Nieuwestad work group is Renewing
Would you like to contribute ideas and discussions about the future of the Nieuwestad and Peperstraat? Then you can register for the Nieuwestad Renewal Working Group in the questionnaire. The working group consists of approximately 25 people.
The municipality of Leeuwarden would like to work with various users of the Nieuwestad and Peperstraat. This includes local residents, entrepreneurs and visitors of different ages. If you have been selected for the working group, you will receive an invitation from the municipality for the first meeting of the working group.
Preliminary planning schedule
The preliminary planning is as follows:
- April/early May: completion of survey.
- May/June: selection of a design agency.
- Before and after the summer holidays: working sessions with the Nieuwestad Renewal Working Group.
- Autumn: first draft design ready and (walk-in) meetings.
- December: preliminary design completed.
- Early 2025: the Municipal Executive adopts the preliminary design and asks the municipal council to make a decision on it.
- Spring 2025: preparation of work on Nieuwestad and Peperstraat.
- Autumn 2025: expected start of work.
We will discuss the precise planning and duration of the work with residents and entrepreneurs as soon as this is known. Of course, other activities in the city centre are also taken into account. De Nieuwestad must always remain accessible and we try to cause as little inconvenience as possible.
