Tegeltaxi
The Tegeltaxi is a lorry owned by the City of Leeuwarden that comes twice a year to collect tiles in your street. You must register the tiles with the local authority in advance. The Tegeltaxi only collects tiles that are replaced by plants, grass or other greenery.
Rules
- Only residents, schools and businesses of the City of Leeuwarden can use the Tegeltaxi.
- Only paving materials from your own premises may be registered for the Tegeltaxi. We do not collect other debris.
- In addition to tiles or other paving materials, you may also register gravel, which has been replaced by greenery, for the Tegeltaxi. However, you must present it for collection in a Big Bag. Loose gravel is not collected.
- You will need to send photos of the before and after situation of your site with your application. This is how we check that you are actually greening the garden.
- Put the tiles in the place you have informed us of the day before collection day. This should be a place where the lorry can reach with the grapple. For example, on the pavement at the street corner. Not on public grass, too close to cars or under a tree or lamppost.
- The Tegeltaxi will collect the tiles on the collection day between 8am and 4pm. If that is not possible between these times, the tiles will still be collected the next day.

We will announce the new tile collection dates on this page in February/March 2025. Apart from the Tegeltaxi, you can also hand in the tiles yourself at the Omrin’s recycling centre.

The tiles will be reused or recycled elsewhere in Leeuwarden.
Need planting inspiration?
The website groenleeftinleeuwarden offers inspiration for planting greenery for wet, dry, sunny and shady gardens.
Why does the City of Leeuwarden have a Tegeltaxi?
Two-thirds of the local authority’s land area is privately owned by residents and entrepreneurs. Climate change will result in more periods of heat, drought and heavy rainfall. Green gardens and grounds can withstand this better than paving. That is why the local authority is using the Tegeltaxi to help people who want to green their surroundings. A green environment makes living, working and recreation in our district more pleasant for people and animals. Because it also looks good, it contributes to a healthy and biodiverse environment, combats heat stress and drains rainwater during rainstorms and retains it better during droughts.
