Naturalisation and Option procedure
Do you want to apply for Dutch nationality? You can send your application to the City of Leeuwarden. This can be done through naturalisation or through an option procedure.
Application
Send an email to burgerzaken@leeuwarden.nl. We receive many applications. We will contact you within 3 months. Please state the following in your e-mail:
- That you want an initial interview for a naturalisation or option request.
- Your name, date of birth and address.
An appointment may be made with you
During this appointment, you will be given information on how to become a Dutch citizen and the consequences of renouncing your original nationality.
Naturalisation
Conditions
- You are of adult age.
- You have lived in the Kingdom of the Netherlands continuously for 5 years or more with a valid residence permit. You have always renewed your residence permit on time.
- You can prove your identity and nationality with valid documents.
- You have been registered in the Netherlands, Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, Bonaire, Sint Eustatius or Saba for the past 5 consecutive years.
- You are settled in the Netherlands.

The first appointment is always an intake
The naturalisation process will be discussed with you. And it will be established whether Dutch citizenship is possible for you. We will determine in consultation with you whether to officially apply for naturalisation.
What to bring with you?
- A valid identity document.
- Your current residence document.
- Your birth certificate, possibly with authentication (more information can be found on the central government website.
- Proof of your initial arrival in the Netherlands.
- Proof that you are settled in the Netherlands. For example, the diploma, civic integration certificate or newcomer certificate.
What happens next?
The local authority will forward your request to the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND). The King ultimately makes the official decision. This takes about 1 year.
Has your request for naturalisation been approved?
The City of Leeuwarden invites you to a naturalisation ceremony. You are given the naturalisation decision. It is compulsory to attend this ceremony.
Option procedure
You can apply for Dutch nationality faster using option procedure. Not everyone can apply for the option procedure.
