Sport and exercise
The municipality of Leeuwarden is developing a new sports policy. This will be recorded in a new policy framework. We don’t do this alone. We enjoy working together with residents, sports clubs and other organizations from the health and social domain. Together we want to highlight the value and importance of sport and exercise.
Next steps
The Policy Framework for Sport and Exercise is based on a broad analysis of trends and needs. We also have also worked intensively with sports clubs, civil society organisations and residents. Input was collected through surveys, Sports Cafés, in-depth sessions and interviews. Over 80 different parties and several residents were involved during this process.
Implementation programmes
Implementation programmes are written for each coalition period. An implementation programme for 2025/2026 will follow based on currently available funding. The implementation programmes are further developed at three levels of ambition: Bronze, Silver and Gold.
Planning
The documents are available for inspection until 27 January. After that, the policy framework and a response document will be submitted to the city executive and council for a decision in March 2025. The policy framework will then be presented to associations and other stakeholders.
Importance of sports and exercise
Sports and exercise are important for a healthy and happy life. Sports and exercise also help to reduce the risk of disease. Examples include:
- obesity
- cardiovascular diseases
- diabetes
Sports and exercise also connects people. At the sports club, gym and in sports groups you not only work on your physical health, but social contact is just as important.
Starting note with central topics
A starting note has already been made. This is the first step towards the new policy framework. The initial memorandum is called ‘A new policy framework for sport and exercise’. This sets out what the process for new sports policy looks like and at what points we ask associations, organizations and residents to contribute ideas.
The initial memorandum focuses on five topics. These are:
- From an early age, versatile in movement for a lifetime.
- Sports infrastructure, the basis for facilitating sports and exercise.
- Strengthening the sports climate and recreational sports.
- Vision on top sport (policy) in the municipality of Leeuwarden.
- Reducing health inequalities with sport as a means.
Meetings with lots of ideas
On the Thursday evening of 21 March, we had a meeting to kick off the participation process for the new Sports and Exercise Policy Framework. We can look back on a successful and enjoyable evening. In-depth meetings were also held in April. During all the meetings, many ideas were raised that we can use to move forward.
