Water
Water is important and is found everywhere. Water covers a whole range of topics. Examples include flooding, sufficient and clean fresh water and drinking water, and living on and near the water. But also surface water quality, dealing with salinisation, renewable energy generation, water recreation and water tourism. Therefore, the City of Leeuwarden makes it clear how we want to deal with water in the Water Policy Framework.
3 main tasks
The water policy framework brings together various water themes in one policy document. That way, we also make clear what the role and goals of the City of Leeuwarden are when it comes to water. The three main tasks and accompanying key themes clarify where the local authority wants to make a difference in the coming years.
Task 1. Future-proofing our basic needs
This includes meeting our care obligations as a local authority, including groundwater, flooding and sewerage.
Task 2. Secondly, we want to use water for a healthy and sustainable living environment for all residents of the City of Leeuwarden.
This means actively looking at how water can play a bigger role in our health, livability and leisure goals.
Task 3. Third, water is there to be add value.
This means that water can be used to make money from it, for example through water recreation.
Planning
- The local authority then collects all responses and responds to them in a document. That document is called a viewpoint document.
- The municipal executive then sends the water policy framework with the viewpoint document to the city council.
- The city council can take all responses into consideration and will then decide on the policy framework.
- We expect this to happen in 2024. Residents can then also express their views by speaking to the city council.
