Events and protection of nature
From January 1, 2023, event requests will be handled differently. Events organized close to or in a Natura 2000 area must then take the Province’s policy rules into account. The Province of Fryslân is responsible for nature protection under the Environmental Act.
What has changed?
The rules ensure that there is timely consultation between event organizers and the Province of Fryslân. This gives the Provincial authority sufficient time to exchange thoughts on the matter. And, if necessary, grant permission for an event near or in a Natura 2000 area.
When does the new law take effect?
From July 1, 2023. This way, organisers of major events will have sufficient time to submit the application.
High-impact events
The event application must be received by the Province of Friesland 6 months before the event.
These are events that:
- attract more than 2,000 visitors a day;
- use of amplified sound and artificial lighting;
- last for several days;
- continue in the evening (after 6 pm) and;
- are organised in or close to a Natura 2000 area.
In most cases, it is clear before the event that no damage will be caused to protected nature. If in doubt, contact the Province of Friesland.
Other events
Does your event not fall under above conditions? You may still need permission from the Province of Friesland. Contact the Province of Friesland for advice. Allow for an application period of 13 weeks.
Apply for an Area Protection permit
You can see how to apply for the permit on the website of the Province of Fryslân. You will also find more information and tips here. On how you can be mindful of nature.
