Sustainable villages and neighbourhoods grant
Foundations, cooperatives and associations may be eligible for grants from the local authority for new and existing projects on energy saving, energy generation or energy storage.
What you need for the application?
- Details of your organisation;
- Plan of action describing the project;
- A project budget.
How much grant can you apply for?
There are four options for applying for a grant. Applications are considered in order of receipt.
- Sustainable beginners – grant up to €2,500
An organised group of residents from a neighbourhood or village in the City of Leeuwarden who want to take the first steps together towards local energy saving and/or sustainable energy generation in their own neighbourhood or village.- Examples: Developing a corporate identity, logo, flyer, organising information meeting(s); developing surveys, inviting a guest speaker.
- Sustainable enterprisers – grant of up to €7,500
An organised group of residents from a neighbourhood or village in the City of Leeuwarden who want to accelerate or develop their sustainable plans and projects for sustainable energy generation or savings in their neighbourhood or village.- Examples: organising collective purchasing, further development of energy-saving advice, deployment of thermal imaging camera, hiring consultant.
- Sustainable frontrunners (up to €12,500)
An organised group of residents from a neighbourhood or village in the City of Leeuwarden who, based on their experience gained in the meantime, want to jointly move forward with projects and actively contribute to and participate in a sustainable heating plan for their neighbourhood or village.- Examples: Elaborate plan of action for sustainable mobility, purchase of own thermal imaging camera for district or village, analysis of housing stock and appropriate assessment, development of project proposal model house, knowledge sessions various sustainable heat solutions.
- Sustainable experts (up to €25,000):
For a foundation, cooperative or association of residents from a neighbourhood or village that has already gained experience in implementing projects and wants to get started with a large-scale project.- Examples: Hiring a project manager to supervise a natural gas-free-ready pilot, research possible alternatives to natural gas, participatory processes around new renewable energy generation.

In that case download and complete the Application form Sustainable Villages and Neighbourhoods Grant Scheme. Send the form to the City of Leeuwarden. You can also hand it in at the Town Hall.
