Grant for a green school playground
A green school playground helps to solve problems caused by climate change such as hotter weather and flooding. It also makes playing and exercise more fun, and that’s good for children’s development. Schools can apply for grants for the costs they incur. The City of Leeuwarden decides by 1 October which schools may apply for subsidies the following year.

Why is there a subsidy for green school playgrounds
The local authority wants to make all school playgrounds greener within the next 12 years. This is important because:
- problems such as excessive heat and flooding decrease
- children get more exercise and play more sports
- children’s learning, development and health are improved
- people in the neighbourhood get closer in touch with nature
- it contributes to a better atmosphere in the neighbourhood or village.
Conditions
The school receives a grant if:
- the local authority has scheduled the change to the school playground for that year
- the design is made by an architect experienced in green school playgrounds
- children, parents and others from the neighbourhood contribute to the design
- at least 40 per cent of the new playground will be natural and unpaved
- the playground is open to everyone in the neighbourhood
- the playground features various types of nature, such as: greenery to play in, greenery to learn from, edible and/or fragrant greenery.
- the new playground consists of natural and sustainable materials. Reusing materials is important
- the plants in the playground are indigenous, appropriate to the place and provide variety in the appearance of the playground throughout the seasons
- the playground supports local nature, prevents flooding and provides cooling in the form of water or shaded areas
- the playground has varied surfaces, such as grass, sand, cobbles or mud
- the playground has height differences
- the playground offers quiet spots and space for nature
- the playground encourages creative play and adventure.
Amount of the grant
The local authority determines each year how much grant is available for all schools combined. A school can be reimbursed up to 50% of the costs, with a maximum of €50,000.
The grant is for the cost of the design, construction of play facilities, training and advice on how to use a green school playground.
