Jan-Dirk van Ravesteijn
Special civil registrar Jan-Dirk van Ravesteijn introduces himself.
A true Leeuwarder
Hello, wedding couple or partners. I’m Jan-Dirk van Ravesteijn. I was born in Zuidlaren in 1967. My studies brought me to Leeuwarden in 1988 and I’ve been here ever since.
Theatre man
I set up my theatre company In Leeuwarden in 1997. You may have seen me at a theatre dinner or around town as Us Heit on horseback during a city tour.
I regularly perform and sing in front of groups.
Of course, I don’t read my lines from a sheet of paper… And that’s also how I stand before wedding couples: I memorise everything and speak freely. That means I’m always in contact with the people sitting opposite me.
And I can respond quickly to what happens and is said.
It is wonderful to make people feel good. I became a wedding registrar in 2010. Since then, I’ve conducted hundreds of weddings and still love doing it as much as ever.
Each story is unique and stands on its own. It’s always like being in a kind of film that you experience live.
Me as a person
I’m a warm-hearted and empathetic man and am broadly interested in people and issues. An easy talker with a great sense of humour and ability to relate.
I have two sons who keep me young and energetic.
My work is my hobby: Writing, acting, singing. But I also love doing odd jobs to take my mind of things.
Your story
I visit people’s homes to soak up the atmosphere and listen to people’s story. Then I turn that into a memorable speech.
With a smile and a tear.
An interview usually lasts about an hour-and-a-half. Then I return home and start brainstorming.
The first ideas then appear on paper. And when the outline is ready, I memorise it to present it in front of you.
We will make it an unforgettable ceremony that you’ll always look back on with pleasure.
