Low-traffic city centre project
The north-western part of Leeuwarden’s city centre is a low-traffic zone. This means motor vehicles are not allowed to enter without an entry exemption. Loading and unloading without an entry exemption is possible Monday to Saturday from 7:30am to 12:00pm. Outside these times, an entry exemption is required. Parking is not allowed in this area, even with an entry exemption.
Why a low-traffic zone?
Leeuwarden city centre is a great place to be. Whether you come to shop, work or relax, less traffic makes for more safety, peace and a pleasant environment. Residents, entrepreneurs and visitors benefit from this.
Ready for the future
The low-traffic policy is part of a larger plan to make the city centre more liveable. There will be more greenery and space for pedestrians and cyclists. These plans create an environment which is ready for the future by making it safer and more attractive.
Placement of five cameras
From 13 January 2025, five Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras will automatically check motor vehicles for a valid entry exemption. If no exemption is held, the owner will be fined. These cameras are located at Monnikemuurstraat, Wortelhaven, Minnemastraat, Grote Hoogstraat and Grote Kerkstraat. These places were chosen because they help control the entry ban and there is a lot of traffic here.
Details of violations
The cameras take photos of motor vehicles and immediately check for valid exemptions. Details of violations are stored temporarily and only viewed by employees who have permission to do so. Other details are deleted immediately. This is all done according to privacy laws. From that point onwards, the traffic controllers stop their activities.
Temporary masts
The cameras are currently on temporary masts due to a temporary power connection, but later there will be permanent masts in keeping with the historic look of the city centre and to get a clear view of the entrances.
More greenery in the city centre
Besides traffic measures, the local authority is working on greening key locations in the city centre:
- Gouverneursplein: Will be a place with more trees, various plants and pleasant seating areas. This will make it a pleasant place to stay.
- Eewal: More space for greenery by removing parking spaces on the south side and partly on the north side.
- Wortelhaven: Will have strips of greenery with a raised seating edge, making the area more attractive.
The greening makes for a more attractive streetscape and helps the city centre against severe weather conditions. Open land helps absorb water during heavy rainfall and provides cooling during hot summers.
Planning
Work will be done beforehand to prepare everything for greening. We will start implementation after the summer of 2025.
