Working group De Nieuwestad Vernieuwt is jointly working on the design

The De Nieuwestad Vernieuwt working group is collaborating with BoschSlabbers to design the new layout for Nieuwestad, Peperstraat and Sint Jacobsstraat.

The working group will meet four times: in July, September and November 2024 and for a final time in January 2025. In the last meeting, the working group will discuss the first draft.

There was a lot of interest in the working group. 270 people had indicated they wanted to contributre to the design in the questionnaire on Nieuwestad. 25 residents were chosen. This considered a good distribution between young and old, male and female and residents of the inner city and beyond.

A group of entrepreneurs at Nieuwestad, Peperstraat and Sint Jacobsstraat are also joining in with this working group.

BoschSlabbers creates design together with local authority

The firm BoschSlabbers Landschapsarchitecten is designing the future layout of Nieuwestad, Peperstraat and Sint Jacobsstraat together with the local authority’s urban planning team.

The designers use the results of the questionnaire as input for the design. The designers will also work together with a working group of Leeuwarden residents. This will take place during a number of working sessions in the second half of 2024 and early 2025.

New layout for St Jacobs Street too

Sint Jacobsstraat has been added to the De Nieuwestad Vernieuwt project. That means this shopping street will be redesigned at the same time as Nieuwestad and Peperstraat.

Sint Jacobsstraat connects Nieuwestad with Gouverneursplein and Eewal. A new layout was already planned for both these areas. It therefore makes sense to tackle Sint Jacobsstraat as well.

Questionnaire about the Nieuwestad

Leeuwardeners want Nieuwestad to have a greener look in the future. This is clear from the online questionnaire on Nieuwestad and Peperstraat that residents, visitors and business owners could fill in from 2 April to 5 May.

1,734 people completed the questionnaire in full. Almost 80% of them live in the city of Leeuwarden, just under 10% live within the municipality and over 10% live outside it. The results of the questionnaire (PDF, 406.99 KB) form important input for the design of the renewed Nieuwestad and Peperstraat.

Preliminary planning schedule

The preliminary planning is as follows:

  • July, September and November 2024: working sessions with the Working Group Nieuwestad Vernieuwt.
  • Januari 2025: final working session: Working group Nieuwestad Vernieuwt discusses the draft design.
  • February 2025: presentation of the preliminary design. This will be done with one or more walk-in meetings.
  • April 2025: the City Executive adopts the preliminary design and asks the municipal council to make a decision on it.
  • 2025: preparation of work on Nieuwestad, Sint Jacobsstraat and Peperstraat.
  • Early 2026: expected start of work.

We will discuss the precise planning and duration of the work with residents and entrepreneurs as soon as this is known. Of course, other activities in the city centre are also taken into account. De Nieuwestad must always remain accessible and we try to cause as little inconvenience as possible.
