In certain cases you need to apply for an ‘environmental permit’ For excavation work in areas with an Archaeological Value.
Our aim is to protect archaeological finds and landscape and cultural-historical values.

Examples of excavation work:

  • Building a house or shed.
  • Construction of a carriageway, road, or site paving.
  • Digging or draining ditches and raising or excavating the ground.
  • Planting or removal of standing timber (felling permit).
  • Construction of a riding arena for horses.
  • Storing products or waste products and growing maize.
  • Laying of cables and pipelines.

Environmental permit and archaeology in zoning plans

Environment and planning permit

In an area of archaeological value, for construction, demolition or excavation work in the cases below, you must always apply for an ‘environmental permit to carry out a work’:

  • A site is a Value-Archaeologically Protected National Monument and the proposed soil disturbance is deeper than 0.30m below ground level.
  • A site is a Value Archaeological Local Monument and the proposed soil disturbance is less than 25 m2.
  • An area has an Archaeology Value 1 and the proposed soil disturbance is less than 25 m2.
  • An area has an Archaeology Value 2 and the proposed soil disturbance is less than 50 m2.
  • An area has an Archaeology Value 3 and the proposed soil disturbance is less than 100 m2.
  • An area has an Archaeology Value 4 and the proposed soil disturbance is less than 500 m2.
  • An area has an Archaeology Value 5 and the proposed soil disturbance is less than 2500 m2.
  • An area has an Archaeology Value 6 and the proposed soil disturbance is less than 10,000 m2.
