Submitting a residents’ initiative
Residents’ initiatives are ideas put forward by residents with the aim of improving their neighbourhood or district and making it a more pleasant place to live. They put these ideas into practice together and pay the costs. The local authority can help with advice.

Download the form Bewonersinitiatief (PDF, 148.68 KB). Scan the form and email it to bewonersinitiatieven@leeuwarden.nl. No scanner? Send the form by post to the City of Leeuwarden. You can also hand it in at the Town Hall.
Examples of residents’ initiative
- Making a community allotment.
- Placing a picnic table.
- Planting more flowers and plants in each street.
- Creating a work of art with all residents.
Conditions
- Make a plan that is also feasible. This must include, among other things, the following information:
- Description of the initiative.
- The initiative enjoys ample support in your neighbourhood.
- The location (map) for physical initiatives.
- Time line.
- The initiative must not conflict with the law or existing policy.
- The initiators are themselves responsible for any financing required.
- You can apply for grants for initiatives that improve the quality of life in your district, neighbourhood or village. You can hand in your initiative to the local authority via the Mienskipsfonds. There are also national and provincial grants such as ‘Jantje Beton’.
